FAQ

Choosing and starting

  • What size do I need?

Small: if you're under 30 and haven't given birth vaginally. Large: if you're over 30, or have given birth vaginally.

  • What should I do before the first use?

Check that both small air holes near the rim are open. Then boil the cup in an open pot of water for 5 minutes. Use plenty of water and never leave the pot unattended.

  • How do I sterilise it?

Boil it for 5 minutes as above, before and after each period.

Using it

  • How do I put it in?

Wash your hands. Fold the cup (the "punch-down" fold is easiest: press one side of the rim down into the base). Hold the fold with the rim up and the stem down. Sit, squat or put one foot on the toilet, relax, and gently insert it angled towards your back. Then grip the base (not the stem) and turn it a full circle so it opens fully and seals. See our How to use guide and video.

  • How does it stay in place?

Your vaginal muscles hold it, with a light seal that forms when it opens.

  • How do I take it out?

Find the stem and gently pull down until you can grip the base. Pinch the base to release the seal, then keep easing it down and out. Empty it, rinse, and put it back in.

  • How often should I empty it?

Up to every 12 hours, depending on your flow. Empty it more often on heavy days. The markings go up to 15 ml.

  • Can I empty it in a public toilet?

Yes, the same way as at home. Rinse it with bottled water or wipe it with Beauty Formulas intimate wipes, then put it back in.

Caring for it

  • What should I wash it with?

Warm water and a mild, unscented, oil-free intimate wash, such as Beauty Formulas intimate wash. Keep the air holes clean.

  • Can I use a lubricant?

Only a water-based one. Oil- or silicone-based lubricants can damage the cup.

  • What can damage it?

Oil- or silicone-based products. Keep it away from pets and children.

  • How do I store it?

Dry, in the bag provided. Never in a sealed plastic bag or container, because trapped moisture can cause mould.

  • Can I cut the stem?

Yes, if it bothers you. Trim a little at a time with scissors or a nail clipper, and take care not to cut the cup itself. When it's in, the stem should sit fully inside.

  • I have long nails. Can I still use it?

Yes. Wash your hands and nails, go slowly, and keep your fingers close to the cup so you don't scratch yourself.

Your body and your health

  • Can it get lost inside me?

No. It can move higher, though. Relax, squat, and gently bear down to bring it lower. If you still can't reach it, see a doctor.

  • Can I wear it during sex?

No, always take it out first.

  • Is it a contraceptive, or does it protect against STIs?

    No. It does neither.

  • I have an IUD (loop). Can I use a cup?

Talk to your doctor first. Always break the seal before removing the cup, and take care not to pull on the IUD strings.

  • I'm pregnant. Can I use it?

You won't need it during pregnancy. Ask your doctor if you're unsure.

  • Can I use it after giving birth?

Not for the bleeding after birth. Wait until your doctor has checked you at about 6 weeks.

  • Can I use it if I haven't had sex?

Yes, anyone who has periods can use a cup. Go slowly, relax, and start with the Small size.

  • When should I see a doctor?

If you get a sudden high fever, a rash, or feel very unwell while using the cup, remove it and see a doctor straight away. Also see one if you have pain or can't remove the cup.
